My wife Sarah and I are community concert band musicians currently living in Winston-Salem, NC.   After seeing a posting on the Community-Music forum last week, we decided to drive up with our family to Charlottesville for the festival. As an audience member, I believe your event was a phenomenal success. Naturally, several hours of good band music can not be otherwise.   But, you had a great venue, a great day of weather, and seeming great support from your community.   We hope that your groups enjoyed it as much as we did. We know that there is a lot of hard work and planning that is required to make such an event so successful.  Congratulations to you, your organization and also the Orange Community Band. I would of course be remiss to not also mention the music.   We enjoyed listening to your group's fine performance. Sincerely, Scott McElfresh (2011 Community Band Festival)

Caught the Staunton band.  Nice.  And the CMB.  Dazzling. Fun.  Heartwarming.  Rich musicality.  Deftly directed.  What a neat group.  We hope to catch lots more of your concerts.  Thanks for the gift you are and bring to the community !!  --  Ann and David McF. (2011 Community Band Festival)

Hello Steve (and The Band),
We are looking forward to the concert tonight.  My grandson, Cooper Hull, is turning 5 today and deemed it absolutely necessary to come to the concert as part of the celebration. His parents, juggling a 1 and 3 year-old as well, had thought that the August 3 performance would be sufficient for this year. On the way home afterward, Cooper was very intent on planning......."Lets see... I could go to the concert and then... hey Mom... would it be too late to have the birthday afterward?"  The final plans are a picnic in Pen Park, "presents and cupcakes" then The Concert!!  Mere words cannot convey how strong his intentions became! Cooper attened two concerts at the age of three. Then last year on August 11, we brought him and his brother as his little sister was being born that very night! It seems these concert dates have marked special times for him. This year, I think real appreciation is taking a stronger hold! Since he is being raised without TV or much video, real experiences such as a live concert are very meaningful! In this "virtual world" today for all its benefits, nothing beats a live concert! All that to say a special thanks to all of you! We all attended the June 14 concert and my husband and I have enjoyed most of this year's offerings. If all goes as planned, 4 generations will be together tonight: my parents, my husband and I, Cooper's mom and dad and the birthday boy with siblings. Thank you for the wonderful evenings you all prepare and share! I wish more young folks took this golden opportunity to enjoy the music! -- Thanks again, Laura and Bob Hull

Hello Stephen,
We cannot let this day pass without a big thank-you for the very special birthday greeting! Thanks for "reaching out" and touching a new generation. It was truly a memorable way to end a birthday celebration! I do not know if Cooper will ever again have that many people clap for his birthday! I think he will never forget it! Please pass along the biggest "Thank You" to all of the band for a wonderful summer season, great selection of music and especially a fantastic final concert! The "Old Glory" essay was stirring, the slideshow inspiring, and the music thrilling, right down to the pacing of "Stars and Stripes". We are proud to have the Municipal Band representing this area. Thanks to all for your dedication and sharing your love of music. Looking forward to the future, -- Laura and Bob Hull

Dear Steve, Thanks for a terrific concert last night, and a special thanks for making my son Cooper's 5th birthday so memorable! He was DELIGHTED! He had really wanted to go to the concert, ever since he found out it would be on his birthday. In fact, he was ready to not celebrate his birthday in order to go to the concert! So he really enjoys the music, and the rest of us do as well. Just wanted to drop you a quick note of thanks. Looking forward to the Fall Concert series! -- Best Regards, Chester Hull

Thank You Letter from Monticello

My wife and I enjoyed the June 8th concert tremendously! The program was well chosen; every number was beautiful, each in its own way. It would be impossible to say which was the best. It seemed to me that many of the selections were very difficult. Anyway, we greatly appreciate every opportunity to hear that band! -- Bill W.

I attended my first concert w/you on 6/8/10. At times I felt I was listening to a symphony orchestra. At other times the best band in the world. Thanks! -- E. Johnson

Last night's concert was another winner! You provide so many with so much pleasure. -- Anonymous

My husband and I and our friends really enjoyed the concert on June 8. It was excellent. One of the best. The music selection and performance was outstanding! -- S. A. Gallagher

To the Band -- You just keep getting better and better. I attended Tuesday night's performance, and can't wait for two weeks. -- J. G.

Christmas Band

Ethereal sound, I hear a flute
And then another, harmonize.
I know who plays, a friend of mine
As they begin the age old tune
Of Silent Night, delights the crowd
Of smiling faces, young and old.
Familiar songs and others new
Then fill the hall with sweetest sounds.
When flowers waltz, to our surprise
Two couples whirl across the stage
In red and green, tuxedo black.
When in come tutus frilly pink
And little girls with shyest smiles
Who point their toes, hop up and down
And gesture gracefully in air.
Applause is loud as parents cheer
To see their daughters dancing there.
Then all are called upon to rise
To sing the songs of Christmas tide.
What fun we had to hear the band.
This is their eighty-seventh year
Of bringing joy to Charlottesville.
