The Municipal Band in 1924 The Band in Harrisonburg, VA in 1924
These are two of the earliest known photographs of the Municipal Band of Charlottesville, both taken in 1924. On the left the Band poses with the local fire department in front of the Lewis and Clark monument at the corner of West Main Street and McIntire Road. On the right the Band was in Harrisonburg, VA, for a concert and parade in connection with the State Volunteer Firemen's Convention. The Band won a $100 first prize as the best of 12 bands in attendance.

Charlottesville, VA, Fire Department Band and Drum Corps, 1921
This photograph, taken the year before the Municipal Band was founded, depicts one of the precursor musical organizations to the Municipal Band. Although the members of the Fire Department Band and Drum Corps are not identified, it is entirely likely that some of these men later joined the Municipal Band. It would not be long after its founding that the Municipal Band would become the "official band" of the Charlottesville Fire Department, a post it held until 1983. During its sixty year association with the Fire Department, the Municipal Band accompanied the Department to many Virginia State Fireman's Association conventions, where the Band participated in parades and concert competitions, often winning high honors and recognition.
